Rename the UOC is an attempt to create in Ukraine an “internal enemy” and become the reason for persecution, experts say. They note that the name of the Russian Orthodox Church, which wants to appropriate the Church, is used in a negative way in the speeches of the President of Petro Poroshenko.
“Forget the millions of Ukrainian citizens”
The Verkhovna Rada adopted the law which obliged the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) of the Moscow Patriarchate to change the official name to the title display “belonging to religious organizations outside of Ukraine.” The Church is actually ordered in its name to indicate the affiliation to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). Changes in title must be made within four months.
The draft law (No. 5309) on amendments to the law “On freedom of conscience and religious organizations” regarding the name of religious organizations as a basis and generally supported by 240 people’s deputies at the plenary session of Parliament on Thursday. Before the end of the session law was signed by the speaker Andriy Parubiy.
Political analyst Mr Will said: “we are so enthusiastic about the war with Russia, they do not care about the millions of Ukrainian citizens who are believers of the UOC. They are not serfs, which can be neglected, what force transfer, rename”.
Note that the name “Ukrainian Orthodox Church” appeared in 1990, even before Ukraine gained independence. The Council of bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church on January 30-31, 1990, adopted a Position on the exarchates, which provided Ukrainian and Belarusian exarchates right to be called Ukrainian, and Belorussian Orthodox churches.
The first Hierarch was Metropolitan Filaret, received a letter of the Patriarch of Moscow Alexy II on the granting of the Ukrainian Church independence and autonomy in its management 28 October 1990. Under Metropolitan Philaret has been accepted and the Charter of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Then the Metropolitan was defrocked and was headed by the Kiev Patriarchate.
Now Filaret became “honorary Patriarch” of the new Church, which was created by combining the Kyiv Patriarchate and the UAOC. This new Church plans to receive the Tomos of autocephaly (decree on independence) from the hands of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. And the names of her yet.
In Constantinople Patriarchate of the recommended new Church the name “Orthodox Church in Ukraine” (ptsu). They say that in Greek the names of churches are: the Orthodox Church in Greece, in Serbia, in Bulgaria. “Slavic names, Bulgarian, Serbian or Russian Orthodox Church – are used incorrectly and point to ethnophiletism, that is, religious nationalism,” – said in an interview with the BBC the Archbishop of the Patriarchate of Constantinople Archbishop job (Hecha).
He insisted that a new Church should be called “right.” “Not the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, because the Church is United. She belongs to Christ, not any nation or state. The new Church will be called differently – the Orthodox Church in Ukraine”, – said the Archbishop.
Nevertheless, in Ukraine a new Church want to assign the name “UOC”, which are selected from the largest denominations – the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. And the forced rename.
Back in September, this was openly declared by the President Petro Poroshenko, in his annual address in the Parliament. “I guarantee that the government will respect the choice of those who decide to remain in the Church structure that will preserve the unity with the Russian Orthodox Church. And to call it so. To facilitate understanding,” – said Poroshenko.
Equivalent to the command “fetch!”
Expert Vyacheslav Pikhovshek believes that the renaming of the UOC is an attempt to create in Ukraine an “internal enemy” and become the reason for persecution. He recalled that the diocese and parishes of the UOC consists of Ukrainian bishops of the Ukrainian priests, and deacons.
Speaking on television, he said, “there Is persecution, renaming is equivalent to a command “ATA”, “FAS”, “kill him” for all sorts of nationalists and radical people. It turns out that the one who wants the UOC called the Russian Church in Ukraine, specifies those who want to scratch fists, to profit the Church property, to identify the enemy.”
The name of the Russian Orthodox Church is historical. Many believers of the Kyivan Patriarchate, Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, the Church parish, those born before 1990, have received the baptism in the Russian Orthodox Church.
Today, the name ROC is used in a negative way in the speeches of the President of Petro Poroshenko. On parade for independence Day, he said: “the Russian Church blesses Putin’s hybrid war against Ukraine, day and night praying for the Russian authorities and the Russian army”.
Note that in Ukraine there is no structure, which would be called “Russian Orthodox Church”. The most numerous Orthodox denomination in the country is called “Ukrainian Orthodox Church”. There are citizens of Ukraine. According to the Ministry of culture from 10 thousand 424 of the clergy of the UOC subjects of other countries are 32 people.
The Orthodox Church has appealed to the President with “a respectful request” to find in the liturgical books “nonexistent fake prayer about the Russian army and the Russian President Putin”. Tulchinsky the priests of the diocese of the UOC said that will give the President’s advisors and service books to those convinced that such prayers are not there.
Nevertheless, the President continues to claim some “prayers for the Russian government and Russian army who are killing Ukrainians.” “Where today are waving the Russian censer, tomorrow we beat the Russian “Grad”, – he said.
The naming of the ROC on this background it is the experts impossible. “Without introducing special markings for the priests and faithful of the UOC Church reform is incomplete. Don’t you think? What to sew on their clothes the star of some of our European method,” sneered blogger Vyacheslav was Cecile.
The head of the information Department of the UOC-MP, Archbishop Clement stated that the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law on change of the name of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is “populist and difficult to implement”.
Say, realize it will be almost impossible. Archbishop Clement explained that this law may not apply to the UOC because of its religious centre – the management of the Church administrative is not in Russia, and in Kiev.
“The fact that the administrative facilities of our Church to the Russian Orthodox Church does not exist as stated in the Charter, which was the Ukrainian government,” – said the Archbishop.
Later, the legal Department of the UOC made a statement that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is a Church of the Ukrainian people, it was created at the Council and registered in accordance with Ukrainian legislation. “We believe this law is unconstitutional and intend to defend their rights by all legitimate means. Appeal to the President of Ukraine to apply to this law the right of veto,” – said in a statement.
