Former Minister of energy and coal industry of Ukraine Eduard Stavitskiy made a statement about the searches in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. He considers them politically motivated, and accused the government of interference in religious matters.
It is reported by the Open Ukraine, reports from-ua.com.
The searches in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra took place on Friday, November 30. The security service of Ukraine conducted investigations at the place of residence of the Primate of the monastery, Metropolitan Paul, and in other areas. Father Paul is accused of inciting sectarian strife.
Appealing to the public, Eduard Stavytskyi called upon to condemn the actions of law enforcement officers who, according to him, authorized the searches with the authorities. “I don’t believe in coincidence: yesterday the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarch, it was decided on the establishment of autocephaly, and today, the SBU conducts searches of the Metropolitan Pavel. It is clear that the Ukrainian government, which is heavily meddled in religious Affairs, will not stop until until take control of the main Shrine of the Russian land, Kiev – Pechersk Lavra. This requires a public discrediting of the key figures of the Ukrainian Orthodoxy”, – commented to journalists Eduard Stavytskyi.
According to him, militiamen have been ordered to find evidence of cooperation of the Church with Moscow. So in the near future the number of searches throughout Ukraine can only increase. However, this was not a surprise. “Just last week I skyped with Metropolitan Paul of faith. Of course, we could not address the subject of stress in the society. The Metropolitan told me that the hardest thing to come. I offered to help in the organization of the pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the pre-Christmas period of Fasting, but he refused. Father Paul said that forgives sins against himself, and not leaving Laura in a difficult period of history,” – said Stavitskiy.
Also the former Minister appealed to the NGOs engaged in the protection of human rights. “I’m afraid, without your response to the crisis in Ukraine risks to stoop to religious persecution. I shudder to think what it might end,” he said.
Earlier, Eduard Stavitsky critical remarks concerning the granting Ukraine of the Tomos. And when he was Minister, he maintained a trusting relationship with Metropolitan Paul and come to pray at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra together with the key staff of the Ministry.
