Letter from albert Einstein (1879-1955) philosopher Erich Gutkind on issues of religion, sold Tuesday at Christie’s auction for $2,892 million, originally this two-page document was estimated at $1-1. 5 million
About it reported in a press-service of the auction house.
It is noted that the letter, written in German at Princeton, 3 January 1954, is a response published in 1952 the book of Gutkind “Choosing life: the biblical call to revolt” (Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt). In it Einstein sets out most fully their religious beliefs and philosophical views.
“The word God is for me only the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends, the letter reads. — There is no interpretation, no matter how sophisticated it may be, can not (for me) to change anything in it. These refined interpretations are of course very different and have nothing in common with the original text.”
Albert Einstein was one of the founders of modern theoretical physics, author of over 300 scientific papers. He developed in 1905, the special theory of relativity, in the years 1907-1916 — the General theory of relativity, worked on issues of cosmology and the General theory of fields. In 1921 awarded the Nobel prize in physics.
In 1933, after the coming to power of the Nazis in Germany, Einstein emigrated to the United States.
Recall that Einstein’s letter Einstein’s theory of relativity sold for 103 thousand dollars.
The letter was written in “the most exciting, exhilarating period Einstein’s scientific career”, noted on the auction site.
