Between supporters of obtaining autocephaly and the President there has been more and more contradictions in the views on the creation of a Single local Church, which ultimately may lead to a conflict of interest because the President, unlike the ideological supporters of autocephaly, agree to any terms which he offered Constantinople.
This opinion in comments to the correspondent of ГолосUA said political analyst Alexei Yakubina.
“Inside supporters receive autocephaly continues to Mature rebellion. Initially they were counting on a full Autocephalous status of the Patriarch. But this week it became known the provisions of the Statute of the Unified national Church adopted the Constantinople Patriarchate, States that “autocephaly” in fact it is completely controlled by the Patriarch of Constantinople structure with reduced powers. Therefore, we cannot exclude that in the near future we will see “the mutiny,” said the analyst.
According to A. Yakubina, in fact, the Statute is a question of creating a Metropolitan of the Patriarch of Constantinople, which may not have the Patriarch has no right without the permission of the Ecumenical Patriarch to establish parishes outside of Ukraine (UOC-MP has such a right), is not entitled to make chrism, monasteries which do not have the right to approve its own Charter, etc.
“The leak of this document showed that in fact, the supporters of the autocephaly in the end did not get what they originally had hoped. The UOC-MP at the moment has a much greater autonomy from the ROC than the structure that will be created after the Unification of the Cathedral. Thus, the “autocephaly”, which is Constantinople, is the usual Exarchate with reduced powers,” explained the expert.
As for Poroshenko, as noted by A. Yakubina, in the current situation, the President agrees even on that. But hardly will agree with the UOC-KP. As there expect that their representative will manage a Single local Church, not a man, sent from Constantinople. Moreover, the UOC-KP do not wish to be in the Unification Cathedral was attended by the laity, including the President.
“The supporters of autocephaly, knowing that in the end they did not get what was expected, less and less willing to participate in Alliance with Poroshenko, interested in receiving the Tomos for elections. And are willing to bargain with Constantinople during more favorable conditions. Thus, between Poroshenko, for whom the idea of autocephaly is important only as an element of his campaign and the supporters of autocephaly, dissatisfied with what is happening, there has been a contradiction, which in the future may lead to a final split between them”, – summed A. Yakubina.
Recall, November 19, on the website of the General Secretariat of the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, it was reported that the Unification Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church will be held in December.
Also, the report said that in preparation for the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on November 27-29, Constantinople recalls its decision to grant the Tomos of autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
“While there is a process for the preparation of Council of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, a specific date in December 2018 will be announced by the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate”, – stated in the message.
Later, on 7 December, the Bishop of the UOC-MP Alexander drabinko on his page in Facebook posted the text of the letter of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, in which he called on the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Onuphrius, together with the hierarchs of the UOC-MP to take part in the future of Unifying Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox churches.
Bartholomew urged the father to take part together with the hierarchs of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate in the future, the founding of the United Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and electoral processes to determine its Primate.
“Your Eminence, of course, allowed to be a candidate for this position. We are also asking you and your hierarchy to be in communication with the former Metropolitan Filaret of Kyiv and former Archbishop Macarius and others with them, because they were fully restored by us in argalasti, but not in their posts and titles, in connection with our positive decision in the appeal requests, which they have repeatedly sent us,” the letter says.
Also, yesterday, 7 November, the Holy Synod of the UOC-MP has forbidden his bishops and laity to participate in the Unification Council.
“Planned “unification Council” is considered an illegal meeting, since it will be attended by representatives of schismatic groups. In this regard, and based on the resolution of the Council of bishops dated November 13, 2018, the bishops, clergy, monastics and laity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to participate in the so-called unification Council is not blessed”, – reported the website of UOC-MP.
