The EU Council approved new sanctions against natural and legal persons involved in the creation and use of chemical weapons.
This is stated in a statement posted on the organization’s website.
“The Council has adopted new restrictive measures against the use and proliferation of chemical weapons. This decision is a direct consequence of the conclusions of the European Council of June 28, 2018”, – stated in it.
This means that now the EU can impose sanctions on individuals and entities involved in the development and use of chemical weapons anywhere, regardless of their nationality and location.
The EU Council said that the restrictive measures are directed at persons and entities, who are directly responsible for the development and use of chemical weapons, as well as those providing financial, technical and material support, and those who help, encourage them or associated with them.
The sanctions include a travel ban in the EU, the freezing of assets of individuals and the freezing of assets for business entities.
In addition, individuals and organizations, the EU will not provide funds to the sanctioned entities.
We will remind, the offer on introduction of a new regime of sanctions was put forward by Britain and France after the poisoning of former GRU officer Sergei Skripal, British Salisbury and the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
The leaders of the EU countries in the final communiqué of the summit in June to formally promised, as soon as possible to develop and adopt a document on the new sanctions regime in response to the use and proliferation of chemical weapons.
