The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko offers the Verkhovna Rada to terminate the Treaty of friendship with Russia from 1 April 2019.
This is reported by media, citing the text of the bill.
Note, the document was registered in the Verkhovna Rada after 12:00, but the text on the website was not.
“Cease from 1 April 2019, the Treaty on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, committed on 31 may 1997 in Kiev and was ratified by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on 14 January 1998,” reads the text of the law.
It is emphasized that the termination of the Agreement on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation exempts our state from any liabilities and does not affect any right, obligation or legal situation of Ukraine, resulting from the execution of the Treaty prior to its termination, in accordance with article 70 of the Vienna Convention on the law of treaties.
Recall on 24 September, Russia received an official note from Kiev about the non-renewal of the Treaty of friendship between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. The decree about introduction in action of the relevant decision of the national security Council, President Petro Poroshenko signed on September 17 – and, after publication, on 19 September he joined the force.
The Treaty of friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and Russia was signed in may 1997 and entered into force on 1 April 1999 for a period of 10 years with automatic renewal for subsequent ten-year periods in the absence of objections of the parties. Formally, he must act before April 1, 2019.
