President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine a bill on the transfer of St. Andrew’s Church to Constantinople.
This is stated in the bill on the Parliament website.
“To establish that St. Andrew’s Church National reserve “Sophia of Kyiv”, which is an outstanding object of cultural heritage, architectural monument of national importance as a cult building, which is in state ownership, is donated to permanent use of the Ecumenical Patriarchate for worship, religious rites, ceremonies and processions,” – said in the text of the bill.
In addition, the purpose of the bill is to determine the characteristics of use of St. Andrew’s Church to create the conditions for the exercise of Church Ecumenical Patriarchate of worship in Ukraine and ensuring the rights of citizens to freedom of religion.
As noted in the explanatory note, the transfer of the Constantinople St. Andrew’s Church is an important step in carrying out the work preparatory to the granting of autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.
Earlier, the Metropolitan Macarius agreed to convey to St. Andrew’s Church to the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
