On Monday a Protocol of intentions was signed in Luxembourg, the Ministers of defence of Lithuania, Estonia, Croatia, Netherlands and Romania.
“France, Spain, Poland and Finland to join the initiative before the end of the year”, – said the Minister of defence of Lithuania Raimundas Karoblis.
As reported, EU countries provide for the creation of cyber commands with rotation every six months. They could come to the aid of member States in the case of very large cyber incidents. The schedule is expected to be approved next year.
According to the Minister, the EU institutions will discuss the possibility of using the project funds of the Community budget for purchases of equipment and software. It is noted that the project observers will join four other countries – Belgium, Greece, Slovenia and Germany.
Cyber force is one of the first projects in the framework of the signed last year an agreement on closer in the field of defence cooperation of the EU. Lithuania has long been skeptical of military cooperation of the EU, fearing that it might duplicate NATO to reduce the role of the United States in Europe. But criticism of the Alliance from the U.S. President Donald trump and the decision to withdraw the UK from the EU affect the position of Lithuania. President Dalia grybauskaitė in her annual address urged “not to be afraid to be at the forefront of European Union integration”, because, in her opinion, “only by combining efforts in the fields of military, energy, cyber and economic security we will feel strong.”
