Co-authors of the Declaration to the 85-th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 became the 38 member States of the UN.
This was announced by the speaker of the Permanent mission of Ukraine to the UN, Oleg Nikolenko, reports UKRINFORM.
“For the first time, the Declaration condemned the policy of the Stalinist regime, in particular, forced collectivisation and the confiscation of food that resulted in the death of a significant part of the Ukrainian people. There is also a need of disclosure of the archives to establish the historical truth and raising awareness to the causes and consequences of the tragedy”, – he said.
Nikolenko explained that the document was prepared at the initiative of Ukraine. However, compared with the previous declarations to the anniversary of the Holodomor, significantly increased the number and geography of the States which acceded to the role of sponsors.
“Among the new signatories – Chile, which is the first among Latin American countries joined the Ukrainian initiative, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Montenegro the Balkan region, Switzerland, a neutral, and Portugal, and the Netherlands. The list are countries in the Middle East, Europe, North and Latin America,” he said.
The diplomat noted that Ukraine appreciates their support of the Declaration and international solidarity with the Ukrainian people in honor of the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933.
“This document is a reminder to States of the world on the duty to prevent the recurrence of such terrible crimes in the future,” he stated.
The procedure Declaration will be circulated as an official document of the UN General Assembly.
Since 2003, honoring the memory of victims of genocide against the Ukrainian people at the UN level takes place every five years.
